ERG praises Pope’s help to refugees & calls for local religions to assist

REFUGEE KIDS

‘Equality Rights Group is delighted by the call made on Sunday by Pope Francis, instructing every parish and every religious community worldwide to host a refugee family.

‘The Pope is preaching by example, ensuring that the Vatican’s two parishes themselves are the first to offer shelter to two families,’ Chairman Felix Alvarez added, ‘thus setting the tone for Catholics and Christianity internationally.

‘ERG respectfully calls on the local Catholic Church, and other religious institutions in Gibraltar to open their arms to welcoming these desperate individuals, and thus assist Government in opening Gibraltar’s offering of shelter and hope to these people.

‘Meanwhile, we urge the community to join and support the splendid humanitarian initiative being spearheaded by the group ‘Help the Syrian Refugees in Kos’ (see Facebook), which in a matter of days has grown to a membership of thousands. The group needs support in securing the necessary logistics, appropriate goods to send to the refugees, and funding to pay for container transport .

‘We call on everyone who is capable to assist the Group in their humanitarian goals and will continue to support them in every way within our means,’ Mr Alvarez ended.
